A Personal Culinary Adventure
One of the most memorable culinary experiences I’ve had was during a cruise that stopped in the Dominican Republic. Instead of opting for the usual excursions like zip-lining, beaches, rum tasting, or shopping, I chose something more intimate and culturally enriching.
We hopped on a truck that took us from Puerto Plata to a nearby farm. There, we met an older lady who felt like everyone’s Spanish grandmother. She made a fire and set us all to work: chopping garlic, peeling sweet potatoes and pumpkin, slicing corn cobs into quarters, preparing bell peppers, cilantro, plantains, and something similar to taro.
A Culinary and Cultural Lesson
Our “Tia”” mixed these ingredients with pork, beef, and chicken to create a beautiful, basic soup called Sancocho. She explained the cultural significance of Sancocho in the Dominican Republic, letting us each have a turn stirring the soup. She then revealed another pot that had been cooking for hours before our arrival, which we all sat down to enjoy with her family.
The experience was more than just cooking; it was an education. We discussed the local school system and how children go to school in shifts to balance education with farm work. Another tour group arrived while we were there, but they didn’t get the same immersive experience—we did. They missed out on preparing and sharing a meal with the family and getting a true sense of what life is like in the village.
This intimate, hands-on experience was a far richer way to understand the culture. Such special excursions available through the cruise line made it possible to connect on a deeper level with the local community.
So, if you’re a culinary traveler looking to blend luxury, culture, and cuisine, ocean cruising should top your list. Bon appétit and bon voyage!
